Lauren Davis and Galen James-Heskett in Between the Mountains.
Between the Mountains is a kind of accidental film. Originally intended to be part of The Diminished (my ongoing labor-of-love that is still in post-production), it was sheer luck that I was able to get the scenes for it filmed at all. (For more on that, read this blog.)
But nonetheless, I love how it turned out. It’s 3 and a half minutes or so of weird randomness and gives you that nostalgic feeling of thinking something might be wrong with your grandma’s VCR at 3 o’clock in the morning.
It’s set in the 1980s and the plot concerns a missing girl named Angelica—until it doesn’t because the main characters get distracted by things like orange juice and wearing sunglasses indoors at night.
This upcoming screening is part of the Killer Valley Comedy Film Festival, an offshoot of the Killer Valley Horror Festival (which will be happening the night before). Killer Valley has been around for a long time. They started as a local fest but broadened their horizons in recent years and now accept films from all over the world—and they broadened their event to a weekend of film-watching rather than just one night. Will they take over the world next? Who knows!
I’m no stranger to Killer Valley and I like them quite a lot. Several movies I’ve directed and acted in have screened there, including parts of the I Never trilogy, Beach Blanket Frankenstein, Necrotic, and Do I Scare You? (which won me the coveted Best Actress prize in 2017). Also, I had a lot of fun this year helping them make promotional bumpers for the horror fest with the help of my friends from Puppeteers for Fears. Definitely check those out if you get a chance.
Anyway, I’m stoked to be part of the comedy fest this year! The fun happens on Sunday, October 13th, at the Bellview Grange in Ashland. But don’t just come for my sake! There are going to be short comedy films from all around the world AND from locals, so it’s sure to be a lot of fun. (Especially if you come see the horror films the night before!)
You can get tickets for one or both of the Killer Valley events here.
Oh, and one thing that’s pretty dang cool is that going to get its first-ever screening on October 13th, 2019. Because guess when it filmed? On October 13th, 2018!
Crazy, right?
Also I met Jason there a few years back! True story: he went on to crew on one of my projects after that. Jason is very good at crowd control!
